Highly Sensitive People

DOES this sound like you?

According to Elaine N. Aron, PhD, 15-20% of us are Highly Sensitive People (HSP), possessing a trait that develops differently depending on our upbringing.  HSPs have the following:

D: Depth of processing:  HSP tend to process things more deeply, taking more time to reflect and respond.

O:  Overstimulation:  Because HSP take in more than others, they become overstimulated more easily.

E:  Emotional reactivity and Empathy:  HSP react more strongly to both positive and negative experiences.  HSP also tend to feel the experiences of others.

S:  Sensing the Subtleties:  HSP are more aware of subtle cues or vibes of others and their surroundings.

HSP are often labeled in negative ways due to being misunderstood.  While their sensitivity can sometimes be a hindrance, HSP also have differences that can also be positive and useful to society.  It is HSP that are alert to potential danger, therefore providing safety and historical survival to their communities.  Due to their depth of processing and empathy skills, HSP tend to be visionaries, inventors and healers.  Because of their ability to feel more strongly, HSP are often artists, musicians and writers.  Although HSP can more easily become overstimulated, they can, with understanding, anticipate and recuperate productively and appropriately.  I highly recommend the book: The Highly Sensitive Person by Dr. Elaine D. Aron, PhD.  As Glennon Doyle points out in the book Untamed, the opposite of sensitive is insensitive, and I wouldn't want to be that!
